Equipment

  • Oven

Ingredients

For the Donuts

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ½ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ¼ cup packed light brown sugar
  • cup granulated white sugar
  • teaspoon fine sea salt
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup milk dairy or plant-based
  • ¼ cup sunflower oil or any neutral-flavored oil
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 4 Oreo cookies crushed into fine crumbs

For the Oreo Glaze

  • 1⅛ cups powdered sugar icing sugar (dairy or plant-based)
  • ¼ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 3 tablespoons milk dairy or plant-based
  • tablespoons softened butter dairy or plant-based
  • 3-5 Oreo cookies crushed into crumbs (plus extra chunks for topping)
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup for added depth and sweetness

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Dry Ingredients

  • Start by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). In a bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and sea salt. Whisk them thoroughly to ensure they’re combined.

Step 2: Combine the Wet Ingredients

  • In another bowl, beat the egg. Add the milk, sunflower oil, and vanilla extract. Whisk until it’s a smooth mixture, and everything is combined.

Step 3: Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients

  • Pour the wet ingredients into the dry. Gently mix until barely combined. Do not overmix, or you might end up with tough donuts. Fold in the crushed Oreo cookies, allowing those delicious cookie bits to be distributed evenly throughout the batter.

Step 4: Fill the Donut Pan

  • With your batter ready, it’s time to fill your donut pan. Use a piping bag for precise filling or just a spoon. Fill each cavity about two-thirds full. This allows room for the donuts to rise without overflow.

Step 5: Bake

  • Bake the donuts for approximately 10-12 minutes. They should spring back slightly when touched and pass the toothpick test. When they’re done, let them cool in the pan for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack.

Step 6: Prepare the Oreo Glaze

  • While the donuts cool, prepare the glaze. In a bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, vanilla extract, milk, softened butter, and maple syrup until smooth. Then fold in the crushed Oreo pieces.

Step 7: Glaze the Donuts

  • Once the donuts are completely cool, dip the tops into the glaze. Allow the extra glaze to drip off before placing them back on the wire rack. For an extra Oreo kick, sprinkle more crushed Oreo cookies over the glaze before it sets.

Notes

  • Freshness is Key: Consume the donuts fresh. If making ahead, store them in an airtight container.
  • Experiment with Dairy-Free Options: If you want a vegan version, substitute with plant-based milk and margarine.
  • Add a Touch of Salt: A pinch of salt in the glaze enhances sweetness beautifully.
  • Try Different Flavors: Swap chocolate cake base for vanilla if you prefer a more traditional donut flavor.
  • Customize with Toppings: Feel free to add sprinkles or different crushed cookies for a unique twist.
